World’s Largest Rueda Dance Circle

176 couples danced the rueda (a Cuban-style salsa) at the first Singapore International Salsa Festival at Downtown East on 15 Oct 2006. Organised by NTUC Club’s events arm, Quebec Leisure International, participants included foreign delegates from Spain, Ireland, France, the US, Thailand, Hong Kong, Malaysia and Indonesia. The previous record was set in 2001 by 173 couples in Miami.

52-year-old artist Akira Takahashi and a crew of 8 Civil Defence National Servicemen constructed a giant lantern and floated it on the Singapore River for the Mid-Autumn Festival celebrations on 28 Sep 2001. The 13m high and 7m wide lantern weighed a ton and took a month to complete.

14-year-old Sasha Christian won a bronze at the 2007 Wakeboard Championships. In Aug 2009, she put up her best ever competitive performance and won a gold medal at the Asian Wakeboard Championships held in Chuncheon City, South Korea. Christian was crowned Reef Wakefest Singapore champion and Singapore national wakeboard champion from 2004-2008.

First International Water-Ski Gold Medallist

17-year-old Roger Koa was the first Singaporean to break the 4,000-point barrier at the World Water-Skiing Championships in Florida in 1989. In 1992, he won a gold medal in men’s tricks at the Asian Australasian Championships in Omigawa. He also won 3 gold medals in men’s slalom, tricks and jumps in the 1997 SEA Games held in Jakarta.
