First Successful Hybrid Of World’s Largest Flower

First Successful Hybrid Of World’s Largest Flower

The first successful hybrid of the Corpse Flower bloomed at the Gardens by the Bay on 17 Sep 2013. Named in honour of Singaporean John Tan Jiew Hoe for his generous support of the Amorphophallus hybridisation programme, the Amorphophallus John Tan is a cross between the Amorphophallus titanum and the Amorphophallus variabilis. It is known to grow at a rate of about 9cm per day and its flowering is unpredictable. The hybrid measured 2.05m at time of flowering. Donated by Mr Tan, it was put on display in the Cloud Forest cooled conservatory. The Amorphophallus titanum, originally from Sumatra, produces one of the largest flowers in the world that emits a foul smell similar to decaying meat. The Amorphophallus variabilis is commonly found in Indonesia and the Philippines and has a durian-like smell to attract pollinators. (Source: Today)
