64 youths wore red clogs, red t-shirts and bit the heads of steamed chicken together. This is a Teochew coming-of-age tradition called chu hua yuan (literally, coming out of the garden) for 15-year-olds. The tradition probably started from Ming Dynasty’s Lin Daqin who won a rooster after winning a couplet pairing competition. Lin’s dad insisted that he bit the chicken head to to be ahead in life. This proved true when Lin became the top scholar in the Imperial Exams. The event was organised by Singapore Kityang Huay Kwan at Chui Huay Lin Club on 31 Aug 2025.
